Cops to practice max tolerance on SONA: No guns, just batons

True to President Rodrigo Duterte’s word, police authorities on the day of the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) will practice maximum tolerance to give way to the peoples’ right to freedom of expression.

“Maximum tolerance. Wala kaming baril na dadalhin sa mga civil disturbance management but of course, 'yung mga security forces natin ay mayroon 'yun (baril) pero malayo sila. Hindi sila hahalo o malapit sa mga rally,” Metro Manila Police director Chief Supt. Guillermo Eleazar said.

While security status will still be on full alert, protesters will be given as much leeway as possible.

"...Hindi tayo puwedeng maging kumpiyansa. Just like the previous SONA and other major events, laging nakahanda tayo,” Eleazar said.

Eleazar vowed that the Philippine National Police (PNP) will not place container vans and barbed wires leading to Congress, contrary to previous practice to limit the rally movement.

This time around, the 6,000 police officers to be deployed on July 23at Batasang Pambansa complex will only carry truncheons and no guns.

There will be 13 sub-security task groups headed by the Quezon City Police District will be positioned from Commonwealth Avenue to the Batasan area, with each group having a single Commission on Human Rights (CHR) representative.

Eleazar said that this move would serve as their defense in the event there will be "malicious" criticism against the police.
