From social media to the streets, unregularized workers of  Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) dissented against the neglect of the telco giant to regularize thousands of its workers.

With the public unrest rising, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) ordered the telco company to regularize over 7,000 of its workers, even warning in a clarificatory order that “any act or condition imposed that frustrates or tend to frustrate the order to regularize is contumacious and shall be dealt with in accordance with law.”

The Clarificatory Order was issued after DOLE received complaints and reports about PLDT terminating several of its workers and holding pre-employment activities before regularizing some of them.

“The clarificatory order merely clarifies that the regularization is not subject to any conditions, that they should not be conducting pre-employment processes, among others,” DOLE Assistant Secretary Benjo Benavidez explained.

The DOLE Secretary emphasized that regularization is “automatic” and non-conditional.

In its order, DOLE clarified that pursuant to existing laws, the regularization of workers takes effect by operation of law and is “not subject to any condition.”

The order was issued at the same time when the PLDT Organization of Workers and Employees for Rights (POWER) held a rally outside DOLE.
