Critics of the administration are quick to assume that President Rodrigo Duterte and his cohorts are after the establishment of the federal government in a bid to extend their terms.

However, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto pointed out that the president cannot seek another term in a federal government.

On top of that, nothing is final yet in the draft being devised by Duterte’s Consultative Committee (Con-com).

“As of now everything stands as a proposal so ‘wag kaagad silang mangamba na eto na (they should not be worried that this is final),” he said.

The Con-com draft provides that the President and Vice President positions may seek-reelection, but it doesn’t mean an automatic extension of term, thus negating claims and criticisms that Duterte seeks to stay “a second longer”.

On the other hand, Sotto pointed out that Vice President Leni Robredo may run again in a re-election even in the current Constitution.

“Ang vice president naman pwede talaga magre-election eh, kahit sa [1987] Constitution natin ngayon. Sa presidente hindi talaga pwede,” he explained.

As of now, the Senate President said that the draft is still in its premature stage.

“Premature. Probably that’s the best word to describe it, premature at this point,” Sotto said.

Duterte expects the new federal Charter to by completed by July 9.
