President Rodrigo Duterte is planning to make a visit to Boracay soon to check on the progress on its rehabilitative closure.

“Boracay is being cleaned right now. I don’t have to worry about the big hotels, they have their own water treatment systems. For those houses near the beach, I think we would have to require anything similar that would treat the water,” Duterte said.

The island is undergoing a 6-month long closure in order to rehabilitate the tourist spot by fixing its sewer and garbage disposal system.

The island is set to open on October where Duterte intends to leave a small part for tourism and assigning the rest of the place to its original inhabitants as part of the land reform plan.

The government aims to re-brand Boracay and initiate green infrastructure projects on the island when it re-opens on October 26, said Tourism Undersecretary Benito Bengzon Jr.

The closure was called in response to the growing environmental, cultural, and political concerns surrounding the island after its overdevelopment and constant influx of tourists.

Data from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines showed that 3.7 million tourists flocked into the beach destination in 2017.
