Despite criticisms on the tax reform for acceleration and inclusion (TRAIN) law on claims of price hike, it will be the very policy that will help jeepney drivers all over the country.

Government officials inked the joint memorandum circular for the Pantawid Pasada Program where almost P5,000 in fuel subsidy will be given to each driver.

“The directive now is for us to issue 10,000 cards in the next three days starting tomorrow,” Land Bank of the Philippines President Alex Buenaventura, one of the signatories of the program, said.

The government has set aside P977 million to implement the program in the next six months for 2018, and P3.86 billion to implement the program next year.

Since it takes time to issue cards, Buenaventura said that those who will get the cards on September will receive thrice the amount to make up for the missed months.

This program was implemented on top of the P1 fare hike on jeepney fare covering National Capital Region, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon approved by LTFRB last week.

While these measures have been set in motion, the government still intends to push through with the modernization of public utility vehicles by next year where jeepneys will be converted into air-conditions and oil-efficient vehicles.

Buenaventura assured that drivers would earn more and operators will pay a monthly amortization of P24,000 per vehicle.
